Sophia Lebowitz is a documentary filmmaker living and working in Brooklyn, NY. She is a graduate of NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study and of CUNY’s Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism.  She has worked as an Associate Producer for companies such as Barnicle Brothers, Propagate Studios, Left/Right Productions, and NBC News and as a video journalist for Morning Brew and FiveThirtyEight. Sophia has produced, directed, and shot short documentaries that have been screened at festivals including Doc NYC, Mimesis Documentary Festival, Original Thinkers Festival, and Yellowknife International Film Festival. The latest film she produced, Watcher's of the Land, is a part of National Geographic's Short Film Showcase.  

 

Sophia is currently developing a documentary about the first queer/trans-centered salsa band in New York City, Las Mariquitas. She also works freelance producing and shooting documentary and commercial work. In addition to her film work, Sophia is an artist and writer. Her writing, photography, and collage work has been published by the New York City News Service, Brooklyner, Chalkbeat, The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, and Refinery 29. Sophia’s work explores Latin American culture and history, queer identity, and American consumer culture.
